Acne is the most common disease of adolescence, although it sometimes occurs in adulthood and is characterized by inflammation of the sebaceous glands. Common acne, which is the one that concerns most people, has the unique feature of itchy, open (black spots) and closed (small white spots) that fill the hair follicle and is its mildest manifestation.
The causes are not known although it is a multifactorial disease. The factors involved in its appearance are:
Fact: It is not a contagious disease unless it is a staph infection.
Fact: What can make it worse is the sudden increase in body weight, while the possible effect of carbonated soft drinks and dairy products is being investigated.
Fact: The process of cleansing the face is contraindicated, as well as crushing, pressing, scratching the acne lesions, because with similar manipulations a severe deterioration with scarred lesions can be observed.
Fact: We may have the impression that the sun cures acne because it tans the skin and “hides” the scars, but after sun exposure the sebaceous glands are stimulated and our skin becomes more oily.
Fact: Properly covered, it will withstand a great deal of adverse conditions. Of course, if it eventually leaves scars, there are modern treatments that can alleviate or even eliminate them. The main methods are:
Peeling: mainly chemicals that smooth the skin, although we will need more than one application to have the desired results.
Dermabrasion: eliminates hypertrophic or atrophic scars.
Lasers: such as ablative and non-ablative fractional lasers that regenerate the skin and mobilize collagen production to reduce acne scars.
Acne requires timely treatment to prevent recurrence and scarring. Acne is a disease, not a simple cosmetic problem. You need medical help and there is no reason to be ashamed of your problem.
